  • The first time I took my camera to cricket was at Trent Bridge. this would have been better with players on the pitch of course, but you can't have everything.

  • There's something about a test match that lends itself to B&W, I always feel. Perhaps because because it's such a timeless game.

  • The ball's just gone past Ravi Bopara's nose here, and doesn't he look surprised. Managed to keep the ball in shot too - this timing lark isn't easy.

  • I have to be honest, it's a bit of a nothing shot full size. But it did look as though Bopara was checking out a girl on the boundary, so I cropped it with malice aforethought. Sorry Ravi.

  • Nearly nearly nearly got the ball breaking the stumps. But didn't.

  • This is one of those where pretty much everything is wrong: it's been heavily cropped, tweaked like billy-o, it's noisy, it's soft and because the red ball is against a red background, only a mono conversion makes it vaguely visible (in the loop of the e). But for all that I still love it as an impression of really hostile bowling. On a dog of a wicket I might add - there weren't many of these.

  • Something I particularly like about still images of cricket is the way players get frozen in such improbable, gravity-defying positions and this is a nice example - he's been completely done there.

  • I like the way the close fielders are flinching here. Would have been great to get the ball in shot but it was going at a fair lick.

  • Bat on ball - nearly as good as breaking stumps. To be fair, there was a lot more of this in the match - this was Alistair Cook on his way to (I think) his then highest test score.

  • Another shot showing the perils of the close fielders. I can't get enough of those.

  • Finally! I was SO pleased to get this shot, and I'll probably never get another. Not in Barbados at any rate.

  • Mac Fingal, entertainer at the Kensington Oval. It's here more for the memories than anything. Certainly it's not a great picture with the woman's head in the way. People kept standing up to take photos, curse them . . .

  • I think this is Jerome Taylor but apologies to him and whoever it is if I'm wrong. I like the air of strength and purpose there, even though he's just patrolling the outfield.
